Looking back Age of Ultron wasn't even that bad, it was just comparatively not up to the mark, especially Captain America: The Winter Soldier releasing the year prior and Civil War the next. Thor 4 aka Thor: Love and Thunder aka God of War but reverse the roles is a horribly forgettable experience. Again, it's not bad, it's just mediocre. Which, in its own definition might make it the worst piece of content I have had in a long time. What makes it worse is the release of God of War Ragnarok this year. That video game is so beautiful and features several common characters especially Thor, but the only difference is that God of War is leagues better. In that, Thor has nuance, growth, and personality. In Thor 4, Thor makes lame jokes about being passively depressed all the time. I am not against having such a personality, but it is absolutely senseless that an immortal god has such strong feelings about love. The problem is, that could've been depicted so much better, but the focus relies less on a hung up Thor but more on a Thor who is kind of pathetic and disliked by even other characters in the MCU.
Okay, disliked is a strong word but he gets kicked out of the guardians of the galaxy as soon as he is recruited in endgame, and the way he is treated by other extraterrestrial characters is just insulting to someone who loved Thor so much even if Thor 1 and 2 has somewhat underperformed. Personally, I feel llike Thor should've also died back in endgame. Well, if not died passed on the mantle the way captain america did. It would've been so fitting, we even had valkyrie fill in for that position and everybody loved Valkyrie. This movie manages to undo even that, as Valkyrie is this drunk presence. She could've been a leading role model to a concerned population of Asgard but she instead chooses to constantly be drunk.
Natalie Portman as Thor is passable. I feel generous saying that but seeing her make a comeback was honestly kind of a treat. There is this one scene where she uses mjolnir like a shotgun and honestly is one of the coolest things ever. She has an arc, which I personally thought was too mature for the movie itself. If she was the central theme of this movie I think I would've loved it more, but instead we got Christian Bale as Gorr, the god butcher. Gorr is boring. Gorr is basic. Gorr makes me feel nothing. He sounds like he has a really good motivation to do things, but he doesn't really have any of the flair or showmanship that other villains had. Like, Thanos, Loki, and even Ultron, were amazing villains because of their screen presence. Even with a character like Gorr, who is a clever reflection of what loss does to a person in perfect juxtaposition with Thor losing his loved ones as well. Gorr's potential turns into something ridiculous for Thor and all I wish is that they would've thought of some better legacy for a villain like him.
The action choreography and visual effects though, as always are a standard treat. The whole movie may have a weak plot and even weaker writing, but the choreographers make sure the audience knows they were paid really well to do it good. There is a fight scene on a mini planet, which is so much fun to watch because of how unique the environment is.
Thor 4 especially failed for me because God of War was on its way, honest. The movie would have to be unrealistically good for me to like it. Regardless, there is little one can do to save a drowning franchise other than cash in while they still can. In the meantime, HuMan will not be watching any more MCU content. Not boycotting, just really lost interest. Get interesting, then call me. Thank you very much!
