Luxury and Contemporary Life

The luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life prevent people from developing into truly strong and independent individuals.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

It seems to be true, what someone once said about the cycle of influence of man upon their progeny. “Strong men bring good times, good times breed weak men, weak men make bad times, and bad times give birth to strong men”. Contemporary life brings with it the luxuries and conveniences that rear weak men. It hinders and makes unnecessary for any person to grow into a strong, independent, disciplined individual.

Throughout history it has been observed, decades of decadence that damned whole empires and colonies. The Indian subcontinent was home to the mughal empire which once commanded great respect in the times of Humayun, Akbar and Jehangir, however, attributed to hedonism and carelessness, various smaller powers strive to claim the power vacuum. Today, there is not a single trace of any remnant from the mughal posterity in any position of royalty. The French revolution is one another example, King Louis XIV grew weak while his population grew increasingly restless but his and the queen Marie Antionette would not hold back on their lavish parties and didn’t care to address the derelict state of the people of France.

This similar behavior is observed not much variedly in today’s younger population. Technology and ease of access to any resource has rendered the common public immobile. To put it in even a modicum of effort is considered to be industrious, and it is appalling how averse to competition the population can be. This idleness caused by the comforts of contemporary life has given rise to a population which is seen as braindead, easily influenced by radicalists, and brainwashed into pushing propaganda for racist extremist political leaders or opening them up to being approached by terrorists. The fact that the youth has become such an easy target to manipulate is genuinely saddening, and the implications of these riots, violence, and embedding of hate will lead to a dystopian world of stereotype of prejudice. In one way this is the transition we can observe when we refer to “weak men bring bad times”.

However, this is not entirely true, technology has also equipped us with tools for better coordination and cooperation. If we can make the right use of these tools to make aware and disabuse some people of the misleading ideals they’re being trained with, we can be sure to acquire a populace we can be proud of. Where every person is a rational master of his/her own mind. Where the thinking is sound and the results are positive. Most importantly educating the population of the history, difficulties, recessions, that have brought about the luxuries and conveniences we have today. To be able to climb upwards on the graph of progress everyone needs to have the mindset of the ingenious experts because of whom we have the world we have today.

Finally, I would like to reiterate and reinforce my stance. The luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life are in no way a bane. They are most certainly blessings, blessings that can corrupt a person beyond repair. But one that can be utilized to bring about strength in person and austerity in thought. To keep the good times going, we must preclude the churning out of weak men.

Do Our Greivances Mean Anything?

The following appeared in a memo from a vice president of Quiot Manufacturing. "During the past year, Quiot Manufacturing had 30 percent more on-the-job accidents than at the nearby Panoply Industries plant, where the work shifts are one hour shorter than ours. Experts say that significant contributing factors in many on-the-job accidents are fatigue and sleep deprivation among workers. Therefore, to reduce the number of on-the-job accidents at Quiot and thereby increase productivity, we should shorten each of our three work shifts by one hour so that employees will get adequate amounts of sleep." Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted. The vice president of Quiot Manufacturing has received a fairly adequate evaluation of the grievances of the workers. The comparison betwee...

Superman 2025

Superman is a classic superhero. He has been around for almost a century and provided inspiration to children and adults alike. He has a certain righteousness that is unparalleled by any other superhero I have ever read about. He isn’t the best or most interesting superhero, but Superman carries himself in a status that isn’t built as easily as other people think. In this essay I will iterate why I think Superman is the morally best superhero and why being him is difficult. (And some thoughts on the 2025 movie) The most memorable thing about superheroes will always be their origin stories. Spiderman had uncle ben, Batman has his parents, and the Flash has his mom. Superman has no real tragedies that motivate him against evil. He has two healthy parents who just raised him to be a good person. Sure, he lost his entire civilization of Krypton, but he was a baby when it happened and maybe he may feel alienated (pun intended), but he cannot feel traumatized enough to do good because of tha...

Oppenheimer

Ok, this might be my 4th draft of today. If I can't keep writing, it might be fatigue. But if I can, that's great too. (Ok yea, I am on the second paragraph, and I am definitely fatigued. Let's stick to one review per day.) Oppenheimer, I got to this move too late, I know. I watched it a whole year after the Barbenheimer thing happened. I saw Barbie sometime in fall last semester, but only now resolved to finally watch Oppenheimer. In my defense, it is a long commitment. 3 hours. Some old hindi movies used to be 3 hours and I could rarely tolerate those. I still remember how long the songs were in Munna bhai and Lage raho munna bhai. Regardless, now that I have sat through three hours of this beauty, what do I think? I think it was hella artsy. I haven't seen a movie this artsy since I used to keep oscar movies checklists back in 2019. I used to watch all the oscar nominated movies, and I would feel like a true connoisseur of sorts.
